Visiting Professorship by Prof. Heike Hanada at Cornell University Rome

In the fall of 2022 Prof. Heike Hanada was a Visiting Professor teaching Architectural Design Studio in Rome Sacred Space at Cornell Rome together with Prof. Andrea Simitch and visiting professors M. C. Clemente and F. Isidor at Cornell's College of Architecture, Art, and Planning, Department of Architecture. She was also teaching weekly class seminars Special Topics in the Theory of Architecture and Special Topics in Architectural Culture and Society.

#1 Architectural Design Studio Sacred Space

The core studio investigates the space and its ability to translate the ephemeral characteristic of sacredness into a physical reality but at the same time the ability to transcend its materiality. The main question of the studio was addressing common characteristics of the sacred by questioning the quality of place, occasion, action etc. Within the studio, each student was ask to select three images of three different spaces they consider `sacred` and to define its sacredness. Given the issues raised in the first part of the studio, each student produce three drawings as an overlay of the selected images an to write a short narrative that describes each image's sacred characteristic.

#2 Special Topics in the Theory of Architecture and Special Topics in Architectural Culture and Society

The seminar examine the complex relationship between Rome the City and Rome the Garden through a series of canonical theoretical texts and visual representations, including photographic images, drawings and film. The students were introduced with a series of intensive lectures/seminars, in which theories of urban and garden typology was presented and discussed, questioning the current and rapid need to reinterpret the relationship between man and nature. Each student had to make a series of self made photographs of Rome and in a second step photographs of personal related objects, drawings, models etc., which built up a kind of metaphor towards the idea of a garden today.
