23-31.08.2018 Summer Academy reproductive design Architectural visions for the 'Platz der Luftbrücke'
In August 2018, students from Wiesbaden, Dortmund, Siegen, Rotterdam, and Berlin will be part of a Summer Academy developing visions for the future of the 'Platz der Luftbrücke' in Berlin-Tempelhof. The focus is not only the current state of affairs, but also the conscious handling of history and the historical architecture of the square. The help of the design strategy
of "Reproductive Design" will be used to approach this memorable place. The basis for this is the formulated manifesto of 2014 with the 8 theses formulated therein. The "Reproductive Design" is characterized by the concrete and unprejudiced handling of historical references from the entire history of architecture, since it is not possible and certainly not sensible to start over again and again. Based on the assertion that "Reproductive Design" works at any scale and in any place, today's 'Platz der Luftbrücke' in Berlin, with its multiple historical levels, offered an extremely and highly suitable location for this kind of architectural design.

Stephan Trüby (TU Munich) and Heike Hanada (TU Dortmund) will discuss the question of the permanence and legitimacy of typology in the age of technology.
Are traditional types disappearing for reasons of flexibility, convenience and economic interests, legitimized by technological progress? Will technology replace typology in the future?
These questions need to be addressed, and with respect to this, a look at the evolution of typology and its interaction with technological innovation over the last millennia to the present day is presented.
