bauhaus museum weimar
Heike Hanada
Every museum is a prototype. It corresponds in its form, its location, its expression exactly to the requirements that are equal to this museum. At the same time it carries the thoughts, the handwriting of the respective architect. A good museum transmits this handwriting only to a certain extent. It leaves the space for the respective content to present itself, to exhibit itself.
In the strict abstraction of a form lies its idea. The elaboration of this spatial idea, the condensation towards the inside, does not need a direct statement towards the outside. The idea lies in itself, formulates itself in its interior spatial conception. By closing itself off to the outside, the body gives support to the idea. The building itself is reduced to a simple geometric body. The closing of the shell of light gray concrete gives the cubature solidity and plastic massiveness. The monolith stands immovably between the urban space and the park. It clearly and simply defines its position in space. Its body of poured concrete forms a simple outer structure and at the same time complex voids inside.
Opening of the exhibition "Metamorphoses" by Prof. Heike Hanada on 09.05.19
On 09.05.19 at 8 pm opens the exhibition "Metamorphoses" by Prof. Heike Hanada at the Architekturgalerie Berlin by Ulrich Müller (Architekturgalerie Berlin) and Ines Weizman (Bauhaus University Weimar). The exhibition is open from 10.05. - 22.06.19.
On 13.06.19 at 7 pm there will be a gallery talk between Job Floris (Monadnock) and Heike Hanada.
The exhibition focuses on Heike Hanada's permanent change of perspective between artistic intervention and architectural reality, as is currently evident at the recently opened Bauhaus Museum in Weimar. Here, the themes of "archetypal monumentality" and "spatial dissolution" confront each other with different perspectives, sometimes contradictory, sometimes diverging. In the dialogue conducted with different media, the built and the unbuilt form a kind of metamorphosis. For example, photographic snapshots are presented in which strict architectural motifs are dissolved into the surreal or picturesque. The resulting narrative moments represent Hanada's artistic investigations, which focus on the "inauthentic qualities" of emptiness, material and space. The exhibition of "multiples" of drawings/objects and "digital stills", a video projection from the architect's studio, are complemented by photographs by Andrew Alberts. The aim is a kind of improvised bricolage, comparable to the intermediate state of a laboratory.
Heike Hanada founded her office hh_laboratory for art and architecture in Berlin in 2007. In April, her new building for the Bauhaus Museum in Weimar was opened. Since April 2018, she has been a professor at the Chair of Building Typologies at TU Dortmund University.

"Concrete / 04" construction photos of the new bauhaus museum weimar by Heike Hanada
'You can be a museum or you can be modern, but you can't be both'
Gertrude Stein
The idea to museumize Modemism is a paradoxical one bound to fail. By virtue of being exhibited, an artistic and political Avant-garde movement is therefore fixed and unalterable, no longer befitting its most important task: namely to remain an intellectual force for the future. Consequently, a project like the new "bauhaus museum" in Weimar is a contradictory idea; an idea capable of posing new questions and challenging the unknown only after going beyond the manifestation of a past Avant-garde. In this spirit, the construction photos by photographer Andrew Alberts are fleeting impressions of an incalculable intermediate state, which candidly yet directly document atmospheric images. The clarity of the structure and the simultaneous randomness and roughness of the state of construction illustrate an inner freedom in the process of becoming. Free of standards, this landscape evokes a radically new and fresh view of space, material and light. In the exhibition conceived by Architect Heike Hanada, designer of the new bauhaus museum, Walter Gropius' 1919 Manifest - The ultimate aim of all visual arts is the complete building! - is given a contemporary interpretation focused on the future of today's architecture. The exhibition is the fourth in a series with the fifth and final exhibition planned for June 2019 at the Architekturgalerie in Berlin. Speaking at the exhibition opening are: Prof. Dr. Barbara Welzel, Prorector and Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Sonne, Dean of the Department of Architecture and Structural Engineering where Heike Hanada is since this year also a Professor. Also speaking is Hellmut Seemann, President of the Klassik Stiftung Weimar, who commissioned the bauhaus museum in Weimar. During the four-week exhibition an evening of lectures is planned for January 22nd, 2019 with Prof. Dr. Harald Bodenschatz, who with his research project Weimar - Model City of Moderism takes a fresh and provocative look on the historic development of Modernism in Weimar. The exhibition "Concrete / 04" was realized in 2019 on occasion of the 100* founding anniversary of the Bauhaus by the Chair for Building Typologies under the direction of Prof. Heike Hanada and with the kind support of the TU Dortmund, the Baukunstarchiv NRW, Bauhaus 100 as well as the manufacturers Hemmerlein and Pandomo.
